Appointed by KCC, gdm carried out the full design, obtained planning permission and the contract for a new classroom block and alterations to the existing school at St. James Junior School in Tunbridge Wells. With restricted room for expansion, the scheme was achieved by cutting the building into a landscape bank and enabled the retention of the existing sports field. To meet the fast track programme to deliver the building and be operational by the new academic term, a timber frame construction was used above a concrete slab and retaining walls. Photovoltaic panels, located on the roof, provide energy for the block itself.
