Set on the site of the former Marks and Spencers store, the Icon at Wood Green consists of ground floor retail space with 99 residential units over two eight storey blocks above. To the rear of the site, a terrace of 22 affordable mews houses have been built to continue the residential scale of Bury road to the rear. This is the first scheme to be delivered in the regeneration of the High Road area, part of the strategic shaping of Wood Green, and designed to set the standard.
Now close to completion, gdm were appointed to deliver the technical design and the residential properties have been delivered to a luxury specification with on-trend stylish fittings and private amenity space in the form of balconies and terraces. The building itself features a central landscaped communal area and roof terraces to foster a sense of community, with views across the London skyline, where on a clear day many historic landmarks can be seen.
A challenging construction project on a site bounded by active retail units and residential street to the rear, gdm worked closely with the construction team to deliver the development. Additional challenges came from the proximity of the Piccadilly tube line directly under the High Road where monitoring of vibration was required during the piling stage of construction.
The new retail space has already been leased to a major retailer, Poundland and the new apartments are quickly being reserved. You can see more on the new homes on the Icon at Wood Green website.
